WTF Happened January 2026
This is the first WTF Happened recap article of 2026 but also the second article to appear on the new WTFHappened.net website. These recap articles are a short highlight reel of what happened in a specific period of time, in this case, the month of January 2026. It is now February, and I realize this could come across as late news, but this site is not about chasing headlines; WTF Happened is all about archiving interesting things about the recent past and on occasion, the not-so-recent past. Without further ado...

Politics & World News
Iran Cut Internet Access During Protests
The Iranian government cut internet access nationwide on January 8 in response to widespread protests against the current regime. (ABC) Iran is known for having some of the worse censorship systems in the world, especially when it comes to the internet. Many popular websites in the States aren't even available to Iranians without a VPN. That's where [insert VPN brand] comes in! [insert sponsor segment about VPN brand]
U.S. Fascist Republican Party Allowed ICE to Murder People
The United States of America situation is actually starting to look pretty bleak. Protesters and random people who are helping protesters and even random old women driving cars are all getting shot dead in the streets. Here's a list of the murders and suspicious deaths by ICE and border patrol agents in one month alone:

Alex Pretti - Shot dead illegally. Murdered by ICE agent during a peaceful protest in Minneapolis when he blocked a pepper spray of a young woman. Other agents were assisting to beat down Pretti and hold him while he's being beaten brutally and savagely. Two agents appeared to take out firearms after already subduing Pretti, and Pretti was then fired at by one of the two agents brandishing a firearm. Pretti died at the age of to several bullets fired within seconds of each other in broad daylight, in front of a crowd of mostly peaceful protesters and people just trying to park their cars. Several videos were recorded from many different angles and locations, including one person still in their parked car right behind the crowd of agents. Date of incident: January 25, 2026. (ABC) There's an active investigation into those involved in the homicide (NBC), but the White House's Kristi Noem has officially and embarrassingly labeled Alex Pretti a "domestic terrorist" and claimed falsely that Pretti pulled a gun on the agents involved. (Guardian) No evidence was ever brought up to back the claims Noem made, and she should be fired for ever making assumptions like that, but we all know that won't happen under this massively corrupt, shameless administration.
Hey, you guys remember Mark Hamill? He has consistently been on the good guys side during all this crazy shit. He spread the love for Pretti under the hashtag #RIP_Alex here. Gotta say I appreciate how supportive he is for those truly in danger and experiencing loss. He doesn't try to defend the shooter, unlike some people in charge of ICE....
Heber Sánchez Domínguez - Committed suicide in ICE detention center after being sent there for driving without a license and then told he would be deported. Mexican officials are attempting to retrieve more evidence and rule out homicide.
Geraldo Lunas Campos - Died in ICE custody on January 3... and he wasn't a fatality of poor medical care; He was murdered. ICE claimed it was suicide, but the autopsy proved otherwise. (Guardian)
Keith Porter Jr - Shot dead, again illegally, by ICE/DHS on December 31, 2025, right before the new year. His family is rightfully furious. (Guardian)
Luis Beltrán Yáñez–Cruz - Died of heart complications likely triggered by his ICE encounter.
Luis Gustavo Núñez Cáceres - Died in ICE custody at HCA Houston-area hospital on January 5. This one was due to poor medical care in a detention center but I chalk this death up to murder because it was indirectly caused by the agents who arrested him.
Parady La - Died of organ failure days after being picked up by ICE. (Guardian) Suspicious timing.
Renee Nicole Good - Shot dead by ICE/DHS in
ICE keeps getting more openly deadly, and their death tolls were already staggeringly high in 2025. (Guardian: 32 deaths from ICE in 2025)
This is why your vote matters, y'all. Louisiana's getting it. (The Advocate)
ICE abducted 5-year-old
A child was abducted along with his father at their own home's driveway by DHS on January 21. (Guardian) On January 30, a Minnesota judge ordered DHS to release both the boy and his father and called the abduction "incompetently implemented." (NZ Herald)
ICE Arrested Journalists For Filming Minnesota Church
Journalists were arrested soon after they filmed a public church protest in Minnesota, and one of the journalists, Georgia Fort, was livestreaming when her home was approached and she turned herself into custody. (Pinkmouse on Bsky) Don Lemon, a former CNN host, was also arrested, and his case for being present only to cover the news was very strong as he was filming everything and constantly reminded everyone that he was only there as a journalist, not as part of the protest. We should all be scared for journalists in the States right now, because we're not far off from journalists being murdered by law enforcement officers and then no consequences coming to involved law enforcers. See previously mentioned Alex Pretti for example. We should all be mandating accountability right now. On the up side, both journalists were released fairly quickly after some well timed publicity and vowed to continue reporting anti-ICE protests. (NPR)
Some other journalists were also arrested after the event, including Trahem Jeen Crews and Jamael Lydell Lundy. (Stacey Abrams)
Church Pastor Eastwood Involvement in ICE
The church protest was in response to a pastor being greatly involved with ICE. (FOX9) Apparently, he was preaching love and peace at a church and then making his money ruining people's lives under the guise of defending his home as a ICE Field Director.
The protestors were being investigated for violating the FACE Act of 1994, which allowed federal officers to basically abduct them semi-legally, but that 'act' is actually meant for protecting access to a place of worship or a place of reproductive healthcare, and while it does apply to the church, these protestors were welcoming and did not block the entry of others. They weren't protesting worship, either; They were simply protesting the ICE involvement of Eastwood. This is the simplest open-and-shut case, but our government has strayed so far into corrupt territory that this is getting drug out to paint a nastier picture. What nerve to use the FACE Act to say protestors can't protest ICE when ICE is basically violating every kind of law by invading homes, shooting people in their own cars and in the middle of the street for any reason they want with no distress from leadership. The ICE agents aren't holding signs next to a church, hoping to get attention. ICE is literally taking people out of churches to send them to foreign prisons. If ICE can do that with no repurcussions, protestors should be allowed to block a doorway... and honestly, I don't think they even did that. What I've seen of the event makes it appear that the protestors entered the church peacefully and verbally interrupted someone's words using a microphone of their own and spoke over the pastor for a few minutes and then mostly stood aside for a while, chanting things in the background. Sure, it's annoying, but they have a right to be there, and the people of the church should understand their plight. The church should respond "We are people of God, and we'll help you however we can." With the power of hindsight, we can tell there are still sane people involved by reading the letters posted to the official Twin Cities website. Some of the letters are pretty disgusting and awful, but others are demanding justice and hoping for a brighter future.
What's messed up is we have actual government agencies like DHS running social media campaigns which try to paint them like guardian angels with guns, who regularly swoop in like superheros in masks to kill opposition like it's a good thing.
Thankfully, most of us are still sane enough to see through the propaganda, but not everyone is, and we all know that controlling the narrative is important to them when they're killing people in the streets like gangs. On top of this, they downright spit in the face of victims and call themselves "peacemakers", like they're actually helping people. DHS is a corrupt and downright evil organization at this point, and they're paid for by the U.S. citizens. They deserve no respect; They deserve to be dismantled.
This is not homeland security; This is a corrupt government force attacking its own citizens for exercising their rights.
U.S. Winter Storm Covered Most of the Country In Ice
Yeah, not the ice we were previously talking about! Actual sheets of inch-thick ice. You know, frozen water. We're dealing with a lot of it almost everywhere in the States.
A massive winter storm hit the States in mid January and temperatures dropped below zero for several days and covering most of the country in ice. This led to deaths due to the harsh cold and made it a lot harder to clean up the roads. (Guardian) It is important to consider how many of those deaths were avoidable but happened anyway because cold weather shelters aren't a 24/7 thing that's open to everyone or because the shelters aren't everywhere there are people. For example, a person in Austin, TX died to hypothermia outside a gas station (FOX4), but while authorities said the person should have utilized a cold weather shelter, those shelters were not open for that person to utilize at any time, and in order to stay there over night, registration was involved. Shelters can also easily reach capacity in bad weather like this.

In Oklahoma, someone drove an old firetruck around to transport homeless people to warming shelters and provide warming sheets. (Reuters on Bsky) I personally think this should be handled by an organization, but until we live in a perfect, rainbow-covered world, more people should volunteer to help the homeless like this man.
If you have time and can afford the fuel and supplies and aren't a frail old lady or immunocompromised, please, consider following by example. Follow Ryan's example and buy a firetruck. Seriously, though, make time to help others, even if it's only for one day out of the year, because if everyone did this, the world would be a kinder place for everyone involved. Your karma will thank you.
Minneapolis Rep. Sprayed With Vinegar During Town Hall
A grown man ran up to Ilhan Omar during a town hall meeting and splashed a then unknown liquid on her while she was speaking to the audience. Omar kept her cool and continued the meeting after the man was drug out of the room. (Acyn)
Airports Across Asia Reintroduced Covid-Style Health Checks
Thailand, Nepal and Taiwan rush to detect and prevent the spread of Nipah virus from travelers. (Independent UK) Nipah virus was first discovered way back in 1998 in Malaysia and was contained and isolated the following year by killing over a million pigs. This virus had a new outbreak recently in West Bengal, India. (Wikipedia) This is probably a nothing burger, but viruses can mutate and get extremely dangerous if not kept in check or eradicated. If you have loved ones or acquaintances traveling abroad, make sure they're aware of the outbreak and potential danger.

Human Egg Rejuvenation Treatment
We now have potential treatment for "old eggs" syndrome where the eggs of an older woman would be considered too old to reproduce either because they were unable to reproduce with or would have defects caused by age. (Guardian)

Canada Computers Hijacked
Canada Computers had a card skimmer built into their checkout system since sometime in early December with nobody noticing until January 18. The person who found the skimmer said the malicious code was removed on January 22 but he searched on the Way Back Machine and found an instance of the code present on the Canada Computers website on December 8. (Reddit) I highly recommend freezing any cards used on that website and checking your transaction history for fraudulent activity.

Stop Destroying Videogames initiative to Get Public Hearing
The "Stop Destroying Videogames" initiative, also referred to as "Stop Killing Games" is getting its first public hearing in the European Commission following 1.26 million E.U. signatures and a rather embarassing lawsuit against Ubisoft for The Crew's shutdown. (TweakTown) This hearing has a deadline of July 27, 2026, so we'll follow up on this dilemma then.

Blender Backed By Netflix
It's been a long time coming, but Netflix has finally committed to backing Blender... and at the highest support tier! (GameFromScratch) This is great news! It's a sign of Blender being officially recognized by a huge entertainment media company.
Meta On Trial In New Mexico For Child Safety Violations
Meta, the social media giant and VR stimulator, is set to go on trial in New Mexico over a child safety case, and Meta's trying to narrow the case as much as possible, not even wanting to allow their AI features to be part of the case despite the prevalence of that technology on Meta's several platforms. (TechCrunch)
Side note: Meta has named Dina Powell McCormick, the former advisor of U.S. President Trump, as the new Meta 'president' or "vice chair". (CNBC)
Teen Boy Died Following Drug Advice From ChatGPT
On January 6, a teenager named Sam Nelson was discovered already dead of obvious drug overdose by his mother. Upon further investigation based on his chat history and known association with using ChatGPT regularly, investigators found that ChatGPT gave him drug combination advice that was very bad advice in hindsight. (Ground.News) If you want to trust a random AI chatbot for drug advice, you're not prepared for the internet. I wonder why a kid with a drug abuse record would have a device with access to AI chatbots. I blame his parents. They should have locked down his phone. They should have raised him to be anti-drugs-for-fun... at least until he was a fully cognizant adult who could think for himself without AI's help. They should have taught their kid to not trust AI and not really trust the internet for that matter. Always contact a medical professional for medical advice.

25th Anniversary of Wikipedia
Wikipedia was founded January 15, 2001 (Wikipedia), which was 25 years ago.
Many will tell you it started January 15, which was when the first recorded edit was, but they made edits before that, and we know the domain was registered January 13. Regardless, the official launch date was the 15th, and no matter what date you choose, it's still 25 years old this month.

Waterfox 6.6.8: Tab Unloading & Passkeys
We got the v6.6.8 update to Waterfox on January 12. (Waterfox release blog) A lot of improvements to the overall UI/UX in this update. If you have some inclination to use use Firefox but find recent AI-focused updates disturbing, look to Waterfox, the watered down Firefox. That's sarcasm. Waterfox is actually like a legacy version of Firefox that still supports a lot of old add-ons that no longer work with modern Firefox.

Catherine O’Hara Died
Catherine O'Hara, best known for her roles in every single movie she was ever in, including Beetlejuice and Home Alone, died at age 71 on January 30. (Wikipedia) I particularly like how Ian Hamilton equated her to "TV Mom", but in all honesty, I thought of her as movie theater mom and thought of Robin Williams more as dad in an animated genie lamp. Still, it's fitting, and it's a sad loss either way. Catherine O'Hara had quite the legacy and left the world mostly peacefully and after quite a long 71 years of mostly success in all her business ventures and with a long marriage to someone in her field who could actually keep up with her, Bo Welch, who has got to be feeling this loss worse than any of us. For Welch, Catherine was his real life wife and mother to their two boys, now also grown men who must bear the loss of their mother in their early 30s. That's not something I would wish on anyone.
Jet Li Started Self Help YouTube Channel
On January 15, Jet Li's YouTube channel, which wasn't new but hadn't really been posted to in years, posted a short introductory video titled "A message from Jet Li." You can view the video here. The video is just Jet Li sitting on a bench with a glass back piece with a garden behind it. Jet Li explains in very rough English that he wants to help people understand how to live life properly.

Music
Jose Gonzalez released a new single titled "Against the Dying of the Light" on January 13 (Youtube) and announced an upcoming album to be released March 27. I like his gentle, relaxing tunes, and his new single feels like it belongs in my "How depressing the world is" playlist. You can read up on his discography on his official site. Show some support! Comment on his single's video and tell him WTF Happened sent you!
Anime & Animation
Trailer for The Ghost In The Shell dropped January 30 and looks fantastic! The franchise was pretty dull-looking when it went to CG, so I'm really happy to see this new movie is going back to handdrawn animation.
Gameoverse was announced on January 23 with its first teaser trailer and a release date of May 2026. (Fandom Wiki) Gameoverse is a legacy IP from 2009 that saw the tail end of the glory days of Flash Player on Newgrounds. This new Gameoverse project is by Glitch Productions, the same people who brought us Knights Of Guinevere recently.
Live Action One Piece

Casting Call: Fallout Shelter Reality TV Show
The closing date for casting is February 15, so if you wanna participate, hurry up and check out the casting call welcome page and application form here. I don't recommend participating if you're not already financially stable or don't have a ton of free time or don't have perfect health or have an important job. This show will demand a lot of potentially unpaid time from its participants, and the prize pool is still mostly a mystery. They also require participants to travel, potentially abroad.

GOG Using AI Generated Store Images

GOG AKA Good Old Games has started using AI-generated images for marketing on their store. (GamingOnLinux) This shouldn't be a thing when all they need to do is show screenshots and cover art from the games to the customers. I imagine most customers aren't even there for original artwork and just want to see the games themselves, so why even bother with AI art at all? I'm sure GOG's corporate overlords are thinking, "Won't someone think of the profits!?"
Highguard Review-Bombed At Release
A new game called Highguard was given way more attention than it was expecting thanks to the Game Awards exposure and they're being review bombed for whatever reason now that they've released on January 26. Highguard released as free-to-play, so it might be worth the time to give it a try at least. It has destructible environments and cross-genre weaponry and themes.
Guild Wars 2 Teased New Cosmetics System
On January 30, MassivelyOverpowered covered a teased new fashion template system coming to Guild Wars 2. You can read up on the upcoming update on the official website as well. One thing they didn't tease was Guild Wars 3. Guild Wars 2 is getting old with its original release date being August 28, 2012. Guild Wars 1 released April 28, 2005, meaning the time between the two games was only 7 years. If we got Guild Wars 3 in the same timeframe, we would have seen Guild Wars 3 in 2019. We're now in 2026, and we're simply tired of Guild Wars 2 expansions.
Banjo-Recompiled Released
Banjo-Recompiled is a native PC port of the classic N64 title, Banjo-Kazooie. This native port released its 1.0.0 release on January 24. (GitHub)
No Rest for the Wicked Together
The popular 2024 RPG No Rest for the Wicked got a huge update on January 22 that added co-op features. The game was previously a strictly single player experience outside of a recent beta test of online features, and this co-op update was quite the welcome surprise. Go get two copies of the game now! Please note that this game is still in Early Access, but it's a very impressive update history, and I would love to play sooner rather than later.
ARC Raiders Competitor Marathon Claims Major Voice Cast
ARC Raiders was hilariously successful despite a lot of very shady business decisions being very out in the open, including one particular decision to use AI voices to voice characters in the game. I get why they did it, but damn, that was a very bad thing to do right when everyone was starting to become very against generative AI tools in the game industry.
Marathon, on the other hand, claims their game has a AAA voice cast including Jennifer English, Roger Clark, and Neil Newbon, all great voice actors. Jennifer English was one of the main starring roles in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for example. I highly recommend watching the pre-order hype trailer if you haven't already, because it features a really cool grapple hook and the voice of at least the trailer's narrator, but Marathon's gameplay in the video is still pretty rough. Marathon is scheduled for release March 5, and I really hope it's not complete garbage. Bungie posts hype clips and ARG style stuff on their Bluesky account.
New Games
We got a new 3D platformer collectathon called Big Hops! AndresPlays reviewed this game quite well on YouTube.
I'm a huge sucker for nostalgia-driven 90s PC simulations and things similar to this.
Antivirus Survivors 2003 Professional seems to be the next hit with its Steam open playtest on January 12. Check out the store page.

January 19 saw a new incremental game that is also a typing game called Key Your Debt. It's cheap at only $1.99 full price, and I already bought it.

UploadVR's Ian Hamilton Fired
Ian was a writer for UploadVR for many years, and he now has a "GoodVR" Substack. (Ian) I suggest checking out his articles and supporting him if you like what he does. One of he most recent articles on UploadVR was about Walkabout Mini Golf layoffs. On his Substack, he covered K. Guillory's art project. Speaking of art projects, definitely check out Guillory's YT video, Painting The Internet Episode 1!
Pistol Whip Developer Cloudhead Lays Off 70 Percent Of Staff
That's a lot of damage!
Pistol Whip was crazy successful for a VR title, and Cloudhead shouldn't have to downscale, but perhaps this shows us how terrible some companies are at planning for rough times. If companies can't do it, how can we expect individuals to? I wish all the programmers leaving Cloudhead a swift rehire. It sucks to be on the job market for long, especially when you have family to support.
New VR Games
We got Dixotomia, Dread Meridian, Orcs Must Die: By The Blade, Salmon Man, The Amygdala Protocol, and Void Jump. I was gifted a copy of Dixotomia, so I'll check that out no matter what. It looks interesting, though. I'm particularly interested in Salmon Man because it looks like it might be a better polished version of Clamb, which was kind of rushed but was based on a fun 2d challenge game titled Getting Over It. You can get Salmon Man for $6.99 on Steam.
We also finally saw the release of Tend With Friends on Meta.
I would love to have this game on PCVR soon. They have a great website at www.tendwithfriends.com.

Oh, and we got Tales Of Glory 3's demo here. I love this franchise, but I haven't tried this demo yet. The full game came out December 19, 2025, so this demo is a little late to the party, but it's still within a month of the game's release, and demos are a great way to see if you really want to spend your money on this.
D-Day VR Museum Left Early Access
D-Day VR Museum is an educational app about war that left Steam Early Access on January 20, 2026. Its full price on Steam is $14.99, and it looks kind of interesting. I may pick it up when it goes on sale, because I'm always looking for more interesting educational content in VR.
Knights Of Fiona Funded
Knights Of Fiona, a VR JRPG by an established game studio known for Ruinsmagus, started and successfully funded their Kickstarter campaign in January. Unfortunately, their marketing was pretty weak in the early days of the campaign, and their goals were a lot smaller than they should have aimed for. They set up new stretch goals at the end of January which they may not reach, and at the top of those stretch goals is a Playstation VR2 release utilizing PSVR2's "unique features" to make it a unique experience. While that sounds cool, I'd rather have the PC version and go wireless.
Grind & Shine DLC for Prison Boss Prohibition
The recent sequel to Prison Boss just got its second DLC titled Grind & Shine on January 22. I like what it offers, but all these DLCs the publisher is churning out are a sign of desperation when the game only recently came out and these updates could have been included in the base game. The Complete Edition bundle doesn't even offer a discount for people who already bought the base game. Thankfully, the individual DLCs are only $5.

Steam Frame Delayed?
The Steam Machine was delayed to mid-2026 after an original release period of Q1 2026. We do not yet know if that means the Steam Frame is also delayed, but it's looking like the wait is real. We're likely going to know more around the end of March. More time for saving your money and honestly, it might be for the best considering people's tax burdens this time of year.

Pimax's first thin-and-light VR headset, the Pimax Dream Air, started shipping to consumers in January. They shipped beta test products in December. (RoadToVR)
Gemini SAT Practice Exams
Google's Gemini is now offering a way to take free SAT practice exams. (Google) It seems they're offering the feature to everyone, not just premium users, but you have to use the Gemini app to use this feature. Google plans to add other types of practice tests in the near future.
FluxPose Successfully Funded
FluxPose, the occlusion-free full body tracking system with tiny tracking nodes and a charging base, was officially funded on Kickstarter on January 28. This tracking system looks extremely well designed. Time will tell if it gets good software adoption and isn't another DecaMove. This project has already got test units out to YouTubers and is building trust the right way.
LEGO Unveils Smart Bricks with Sensors
LEGO, the creators of... well, LEGO, announced their new product line titled
"LEGO Smart Play" which includes LEGO blocks with electronics and sensors in them allowing them to be programmed and communicated with over a proprietary communication layer titled BrickNet. This product line is actually pretty creative, but it reminds me of LEGO's previous project, K'nex. I'm sitting on a K'nex coaster kit I should really open up and toy with.

Closing Discussion: Everything Keeps Dying So New Things Can Do The Same Thing In Worse Ways!
To end this month's entry in the WTF Happened logs, I feel like we need something really interesting that dwarfs everything else cool that happened this month, but a lot happened in January, and most of it felt so sad and maddening, so what to highlight... I know! The past! Better yet, let's dwell on cool things that got unnecessarily killed off and then either never got replaced or got replaced with inferior alternatives.
Don't mind me. I've just been around the block a few times, so every time someone's outraged about something Adobe or Discord or whoever else did something evil, I'm just like,

but then, I think about it, and most of the time, the better alternative has been replaced with whatever those evil companies offer or has been killed by them. Discord's looking worse by the minute with threats of age verification coming next month, but thankfully we have plenty of other voice communication options out there, and we even have some open source platforms to completely swap into Discord's place.
Adobe's products were mostly acquired from buy-outs and mergers and then discontinued or locked behind a rather obscene paywall titled Creative Cloud. The moment Creative Cloud took affect, I stopped buying Adobe products, and I never joined their subscription service. I tried a free trial once or twice, but they always wanted a credit card, and I knew they were predatory, so I just stuck with CS6 until they even took my CS6 license away permanently. The same thing happened to all my other professionally licensed software. They all went free-with-subscription or just plain subscription. Once CS6 was taken from me, I stopped pursuing the arts for a while. I eventually got back into digital painting passively thanks to Serif Affinity Photo, but guess what, that's no longer a paid software... just a year or two after its purchase. Tell me, if this happens regularly, why do I keep falling for it? Why can't I just find a company that won't screw me over?
This keeps happening! The product gets good, I gain some skill using it, and the product goes away. I saw this with Macromedia Flash, which became Adobe Flash then Adobe Animate. I saw this with Unity. I saw this with Serif Affinity most recently, and now, I'm seeing it with Discord. It happens to anything that's not open source.
As far as open source alternatives go, most of my toolset is thankfully covered these days, but Flash is still mostly missing an alternative that actually feels like Flash felt. Wick Editor is decent but feels like a very outdated Flash 4. The only hope I have is that Wick Editor and things like it will gain some traction in the community and get tons of features like we saw with Blender and Godot.
Anyway, that's all for this month's recap article. I need a new slogan to say for the new year, so...
